I've not done anything harder than just double knitting sleeves in the round on straights becasue I was lazy and didn't want to go digging up my circulars or double points.

I found a beautiful blanket on Ravelry that is celtic knots. The one on Ravelry is crocheted, but I got to thinking how pretty it would be knitted. So I charted out some knots and was about to start when I remembered a knit stitch is not square, it is shorter than it is wide. So I thought 'no problem, I'll knit the square blanket in the round.' Then, then the light went off above my head. Why not double knit it? Why not? So I did some quick research and brushed up on the concept of double knitting. Turns out knitting a square in the round via double knitting is not hard as I thought, it's double hard!

I tried to cast on the red and black together, but quickly saw that was not going to work. Then I had the idea to knit each color separately until it was time to start swapping colors. That worked out great until I went to combined the two on the same needles,. It very quickly became apparent that as I knit the two separately, I was knitting counter-clockwise. When placed back to back, they spiraled around in opposite directions. Grrr.

So then I remembered that I had taught myself to knit backwards as I hate turning my work to purl if I am just doing straight stock-stitch. So I cast on the black and knit it normally for 6 rounds, and cast on the red and knit it backwards (knit clockwise) for 6 rounds and joined the two together and started double knitting on my merry way. The only problem I am now encountering is what increase method to use. KFB is leaving a purl looking stitch I don't much care for. I am going to try M1F and M1B to see how that looks.

Cute little knit patterns!

I am not big on knitting baby stuff, I have very few babies in my life. My Uncle's wedding was on October 19th, so October 1st I decided I wanted to wear Butterfly. I ordered Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud in Stream, some Knit Pick interchangeable needles (love how pointy the tips are) and navy blue beads. I got a size 10 bead, and ended up having to make my own bead hook out of 26 gauge wire. I choose to slip the bead on where I wanted it instead of stringing them on to begin with. As I am to OCD to allow the beads to 'randomly' appear on the dress, I instead opted to add a bead to the center of each 'diamond'. I also added a bead to each knit stitch in the top hem ruffle. It added quite a bit of weight to the dress, which is what I wanted.

I also bought a slip pattern and fabric a shade lighter than the yarn to wear underneath. I was going to have the two separate, but once again OCD kicked in and I didn't like the difference in necklines. I ended up whip stitching Butterfly to the slip's neckline. This also enabled me to use the slip's straps and saved me from knitting straps only hours before the wedding. (I finished at 11:30 the night before the wedding!)

I knitted in the round instead of seaming the sides. I did make some cap sleeves for it, but was told it made the dress look too granny instead of old-fashion. I knit 10 inches of the hem and added a short-row cap to the top to rest on the edge of my shoulder. I may still put the sleeves back on. I will have to think on this longer.

Thermal!!

I finally finished Thermal from Knitty.

Yarn: Knit Picks Gloss in Cocoa; 70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk.
Needles: 3mm Double Point and 3mm Circular (both Knit Picks)
Notes: I love this sweater!! I searched all my nearby yarn shops for another skein of the gray, and no one had it. I asked one shop (listed as a carrier on Blue Sky Alpaca's site) when they might order in more and was told (quite rudely) that it was almost spring and they wouldn't be ordering any more wool.

Sorrr-y!

So I had to go online and order some. Dye lot won't be the same, but I will worry about that when the time comes.

I did have someone ask how I made decreases in the Tunisian hat. I was constructing the hat so the row would go from brim to top. I would have the brim in my right hand and the top in my left. I planned on leaving a 2" diameter gap at the crown where I would simply crochet in the round to close up the top of the hat.

I chained 14 stitches, and would work 12 of the stitches, 10 of the stitches, 12 of the stitches, then 14 again. I did this til the brim was wide enough to fit my head.

So, no more pics until I get my order. Hopefully it will arrive before the end of the week. I will keep you all informed. I will also post a pattern once I am done.

Stay tuned!

The sega of the hat

So lunch on Wednesday, after all the excellent suggestions from the crafties on Craftster, I just went with the Tunisian thing. I wanted to do a whole skein of a swatch before I made any judgment calls. So here is the Tunisian:

After skein ran out, I just sat and stared at it. It looks REALLY close. It has the "bubble rib" thing going.

So then rina was fabulous enough to go and swatch a single crochet round and post her pic. That got me thinking again, and I undid a few rows and chained a small round of 14 stitches and SC from the inside, so the WS appeared on the outside. (Is that what you were thinking rina?) So here is that.

My only issue with the SC is that the ribs slightly twist. I noticed it on my swatch (even is the picture didn't bring it out) and on rina's swatch. So I think I will pick up another skein of the Grey Wolf and try out an entire crochet pattern. Which ever one I don't like will be toaded (frogging is for knitting, I decided toading is for crochet, who's with me!?) and will become the ear flaps.

Also did some 8-strand braiding.

This is the ties coming down from the ear flaps. I know it's not exact, I suspect they used a 6 strand version, but I like it!

Craft Night Update

Tuesday night has become a craft night for me and a friend. I usually go over to her house and lug along a tone of different projects and we sit and watch Tivo episodes of Heros. Never seen the show before, and I am still a little lost, but it is fast becoming a favorite.

Last week I brought along the wallet chainmaile I am working on and Devon, her son, immediately was interested. I taught him the weave and set him to work on my chain. He added a good 4" to it <s>for me</s> while I taught him.

He mentioned last week he wanted to do something finer for his girlfriend, so I brought some 18g and 20g steel wire with me last night. I showed him how to wrap the wire and cut the rings, and also showed him some weave pictures he could try out.

I also worked on a bracelet I started for T's boss. I had decided on the Conundrum weave and had started it on Saturday. Tuesday night T mentions that the Boss likes red, and it would be cool if I could incorporate red into the bracelet.

Lucky for T, I had some red coated copper wire. So Tuesday night I set to work replacing some of the steel rings with red ones.

Here is the bracelet thus far.
My apologies for the blurry-ness of the picture. So the hat was pushed off to the side a bit.

Anyway, I went to La Petite Knittery in Ladera Ranch on Sunday looking for some bulky, rove looking yarn. I had in mind something like Rowan Big Wool, but thought it looked to "spun". So then I was thinking something like Rowan Big Wool Tuft, but couldn't find any. I think it has been discontinued?

Anyway I did find some Blue Sky Alpaca Bulky. I had originally wanted a Merino Wool, but as soon as I spied this and touched it, I was in LOVE! It is perfect! I bought a skein each of Grey Wolf and Porcupine.

So now that I have the perfect yarn, the perfect stitch search began in earnest. I printed out the pictures my co-worker emailed to me and have been pondering them for two weeks now. Thinking through each stitch possibility in my head. At first glance I thought Knit. The website also lists the hat as "a hand knit item." But as most yarn crafters know, many times items are just listed at knit when they are definitely not. I was also thinking knit because of the edge above the eyes. That looked like a knit bind-off. I was also thinking knit because of the stitch uniformity. So I tried some knit stitches, and nothing seemed to look like the picture.

Then as I looked a the actual stitch, it looked more crochet. Like the hat had been crocheted sideways, instead of from the brim up or the crown down. So I tried some crochet techniques, and again, nothing seemed to look right.

Then I posted for some help on Craftster. Early posts are suggesting tunisian. After looking at the pictures Amalas posted, I have to be inclined to agree at this point. I have some experimenting to do doing my lunch today, but I think we have a winner! Good thing I brought this project along with me today. I don't think I could have waited the rest of the day to try this out!

Still jamming

Still knitting away on that big blue sweater. It takes about 8 minutes a row, and each row adds about 1/8" in length. So, it is going to take a while. I would like to focus exclusively on this project, but the repetitiveness of it takes it's toll.

As a break, I continue to work on the Blue Crochet Motif top. I have completed 18 of the 30 motifs needed, if I decide to do the sleeveless version. If I want sleeves, I figure another 16 to 20.

I also started on making some gloves for a son of a friend. Pictures to come of that.

I also got back into chainmaile. I spent all day Sunday hunched over my 1/4" and 3/8" dowels wrapping 14g galvanized steel wire. After I have wrapped 8" (or until my blisters become to painful to continue wrapping), I then get out my Dremel and start cutting apart all the individual rings. I decided to do a Byzantine Weave with 3 center links. Similar to this picture:

I now have about 14" woven or knitted. I am planning on making a 24" wallet chain to attach to a leather wallet I got for free from the Love Ride I went on back in November.

Hat

As word of my crafty-ness has spread around work, I get more and more co-workers asking for fixes or "mimics" as I call them. They will see something they like somewhere and ask me to make it for them (or something like it for them) as they assume it will be a lot less.

I do enjoy this as I never quite know what project I will get when I agree to make something for them. I love the research going into the construction, the stitch type, the guage, what media will I be using... love it!

So I had a co-worker email me these pictures and request this item the beginning of December, you know, right before busy last-minute gift-crafting time.

So I finally have some free time to investigate. I do love crochet, but I don't like a lot of the crochet patterns that are out there. Things have improved with SnB's Happy Hooker, but there is still a ways to go.

I bought the Long Sleeve Motif pattern a while back on Crochet Pattern Roundup but the website is now down, and the pattern is unavailable. I was working on that when my ferrets got a hold of my half finished shirt and proceeded to undo all that I had done. It died a very sad and violent death.

I was crusin' around Craftster when I spotted a crochet-along for Sleeveless Motif Top. I bought some new thread and started making my own interpretation of that pattern.

So here is my work thus far:

I am using #10 crochet thread and a F hook. Each square is about 4" and I attach them as I go along. It's coming out really nice and delicate.

I have about 9 out of 30 motifs done. At least I think it will take 30. I will have to see once I start final assembly. This one has been going so quick and easy I may pickup a new color and start over on my Long Sleeve Motif. I'm thinking some springy color like pale yellow.

Blue

I have been working on a lot of blue projects lately. Or it may be that I have been working on 2 blue projects lately, just one of them has been giving me problems so I have had to restart it several times.

Here is the problem project:
I was making this for a family member. I cast on 198 stitches and worked it circular until the arms, and split off and worked the front. I was following the directions oh so carefully, and when I had Family Member try it on, it grew. It stretched and grew a TON. So I ripped it down until it was at the arms and then started my way back up. That was when I realized how long it had been since I had initially started this project, put it down, and restarted it. When I had first started this, I wrapped the yarn around my needles the wrong way and the stitches came out crossed. I had done about 7" like this when I set the project aside for a while. By the time I came back to it, I had figured out my cross stitched dilemma and had corrected my knitting. I had continued on my merry way not realizing I had two stitch types going.

So I ripped back to 3", figured that would be fine as the usual tighter rib at the bottom of garments, and would work my way back up. At this point the project had been going on for a year and a half. Anyway, as I am reknitting, Family Member mentions he no longer likes pull-over sweaters and now prefers cardigans. So I rip back to the initial cast-on stitches, and work back and forth making it a cardigan. I get about 7" up on that one when I now realize I have tightened up my stitches, and Family Member has gone up a size from L to XL. So with my new tight stitches and his new, um, not so tight midsection, I needed to start all over. I found a new pattern in Knit 1 which calls for a different gauge yarn, but I re-mathed everything and got going. So this is the point I am now at.

I now have about 350 stitches on the needles and did a 3" furrow rib, then did a standard stock. I am hoping I won't need to redo this ever again. All my calculations and measurements had better be dead on from here on out!

New Years Rush

My uncle rides a motorcycle, and I thought the Yorick scarf from Knitty Fall ’05 would be perfect for him. I had remembered him telling someone that he hated wearing scarves while riding because the ends always flapped loose. I thought I would be all clever and make the scarf 4 feet, just long enough to tie at his throat and hang down a few inches so the ends would always be tucked into his leather coat. I worked for several days on it and finally finished. I attempted hand felting for the first time, and the scarf came out perfect!

I presented the scarf to him and he thanked me for it, and I never saw him wear it. To be fair, I did give him the wool scarf in July. Well come New Years Eve morning he asks if I could make it longer. He wanted to wear it out that night to a New Years party that was outside. Since I had hand-felted the scarf via shocking it with hot and cold water, the scarf wasn't as felted as it could be, and I could still see some stitch definition. I cut the scarf in half, pulled out the felted stitches till I had some live stitches, and was off knitting. Several hours later and several length tests later he deemed the length sufficient at 6 feet. I didn’t want to hand felt the scarf again, so I threw it into the washing machine with a few jeans.

Once the wash cycle was done I pulled out the scarf to find that some of the jean lint had found its way to the white felted scarf, and that that the new portion of the scarf wasn’t as felted as the old part. Also, the scarf had been curling in on the sides, and so the sides had felted curled. He saw the blue tuffs and the inconsistent felting on his scarf and I could see the disappointment on his face. I set to work hand washing the scarf to pull off the blue and to try and felt the new portion more, while trying to uncurl the edges to make it lie flatter. It was finally “white” enough and “even” enough so I blocked it on a towel and rolled it up to dry. It was done just in time for his party! He got several comments on the scarf with a few people offering to buy it from him. He has since asked me for another in black. This time I will okay the length with him before felting.

Thanksgiving Thank Yous

To thank my Aunt for having me over for Thanksgiving in New York, I made everyone in the family a little something.

Here is a scarf I made for my cousin Olivia:

Here is a hat I made for my cousin Gideon. The original scarf was about twice as wide and I had 4 feet done when I realized I wasn't going to have enough yarn. I ripped it all out and started over, and knitted like mad the three or so days I was there, trying to at least finish before I left. The edge is something I am proud of as I picked up six stitches at a time around the edge and did that nifty fold over design.

I also made a pretty scarf for my aunt, but didn't get a chance to take a picture of it. I made hers from a soft furry yarn, but not that fun fur crap. It was more like a cheap mohair acrylic knock-off fur. Yup, yarn snob me!

August Bride

Another thing I forgot to post. My co-worker, Antoinette, had her wedding in August. She saw the jewelry I had made for my friend Brianna's wedding back in June, so she commissioned me to make jewelry for her and for 10 of her bridesmaids. Yes, 10!

So here are some of my shots and some from the happy day:

Warmly

I am headed to NY for Turkey-day next week, and have been frantically preparing by knitting up a lot of warm stuff. The (then) expecting mommy is holding the sweater. This is the same co-worker that bought the blue sweater after the first co-worker flaked on me.

Pattern: Own
Yarn: Bernat Cotton Tots, Strawberry
Time: 2 days
Stitches used: 1x1 rib, stock, seed, k2tog, skp, crochet cast off.
Construction:
Knit flat til arm holes. Front and back knit seperate and crochet seamed at sholders. Back of collar stitches put on holder, front stitches picked up on each side. Lacy crochet cast off on the collar. Arms knit 1x1 rib for 1", then knit flat and mattress seamed. Lace pattern is on front and back, and is one I made up on the fly, and one I didn't make notes for (BAD ANGI!) and one I can't remember how I did. I really need to learn to keep notes on stuff I do. I also had to guess at sizes since I had never made a baby sweater before. I was told by the mom that the baby (her name is Camay) does fit in the sweater right now, she just can't button it!

You can also see why I ran out of blue buttons for the blue sweater posted previously!

I can't get over how small it is!

Blogs/Patterns I surfed today

Sew Nice, Blog

Rusted Root, Pattern

Sleeveless Motfit Top, Pattern

Vive La Provence Skirt, Interweave Knits, 2004

Finally, some pictures and a FO!

First, I will reference this old post from my first knit & stuff blog. I'll wait for you to read and come back:

http://angipantskicks.blogdrive.com/archive/33.html

Second, I will now post these pictures:

Perhaps you would like to hear the tale?

Well, this sweater was commissioned by a co-worker of mine about a year and a half ago. I had finished up a pink one of similar construction for her granddaughter, and she had asked me to make a blue one for another grandgirl. So I was about where I was as pictured in my old blog, when co-worker just up and quit with no warning. She did contact me once, about a month later, and said she was still interested in getting the sweater as I had already bought the yarn and started on it. However, I have not heard from her since and don't have a way of contacting her.

So anyway, I pondered the problem of mismatched dye lots and decide to do the button panel, bottom rib, and the collor with the lighter color, and do 1 row of each with the lighter blue and the darker blue. So that is where the striping comes in. The sleeves were done with a third ball that was a medium blue. I have never seen such variety between 1 yarn type! This was all the same brand and color on the label!

So here is my summary:

Pattern: Own
Yarn: Bernat Cotton Tots, Blue Berry
Time: 19 months
Stitches used: 1x1 rib, stock, seed, crochet cast off.
Construction:
Knit flat til arm holes. Front and back knit seperate and crochet seamed at sholders. Back of collar stitches put on holder and front picked up on each side. Arms knit flat and matress seamed.

Details:
This yarn has a tendancy to pill. Just knitting it up it devloped a haze all over. The buttons I found at JoAnn's Fabric. I actually planned on having all blue flowers, but lost the second card of buttons. When I went back to JoAnn's (a year later) they no longer carried that style of button that I could find. I found the butterfly ones, which worked out perfectly as the flowers were a darker blue and matched the darker shade of the yarn, while the butterflies match the lighter shade.

I brought it to work to show to a friend, and another co-worker saw it and asked how much it was. I told her the price I had quoted the other lady over a year ago, and ended up selling the sweater! How perfect.

Off-line busy-ness

While I have done a poor job of staying up-to-date with my craft postings, I really have been busy, and crafting.

First off I am >T H I S< close to finishing up a sweater of my own design. Details will follow. My inspration was a sweater from Anthropologie... of which I can no longer find a reference picture to post for you.

Secondly, I am working on a crochet top. Long-Sleeve Motif Top
The yarn I am using is recycled from a sweater my ferrets got a hold of and tore apart a sleeve. I never really wore the sweater, so it is perfect for reuse.

I am it itching to get some other projects uderway, but want to finish of these first.

A while ago, OSW

So I create this nice new site, and then nothin'! I felt bad, so here is a somethin'. I made this for my sister last year. Each year I try to make them something hand-made, but many years I get lazy and/or run out of time so I resort to buying their love and admiration. This year is one of those years, last was not.

Emily had a thing for Emily the Strange. The attraction was the following: Same name, Dark hair, Different, Loved cats. 'Nuf said.

It was during my One Skein Wonder faze that I decided what would be the perfect gift for my sister. So I took the One Skein Wonder pattern and added a little somethin' to the back; and Strangeness was born:

If you blur your eyes just a little it looks just like her! I finished just it time to get it mailed off to arrive on her b-day. This year her b-day has come and gone and I am still searching for the perfect gift...

Anyway, details on the Strangeness:
Pattern: One Skein Wonder by Glampyre Knits

Yarn: (Have to go home and check)K, at home. I used Rowan Handknit (DK) Cotton in White (263), Red (215), and Black (252).
Notes: Make sure you take into account that rows are usually shorter than the columns of stitches, and your chart may come out looking a little 'flat' than what you had pictured. I also had to play with the arm increases as they came very close to my picture in some areas.

I need to gather up my other OSW's to post on here. I did a lacy pink one that I absoulty love.

Later.

Thought I should mention...

I didn't just up and start crafting with this blog!
